Could you live without money? Mark Boyle can. In fact, he has been doing so since 2008.
Boyle, who has a degree in economics, was so moved by a video called Gandhi that he decided to become the change he wanted to see in the world.
The little chap in the loincloth taught me one huge lesson – to be the change I wanted to see in the world.
Surviving without money can be difficult but not impossible. Of course it requires a drastic change in lifestyle. In Boyle’s case he cooks the food he either grows himself, barters for or forages from the wild on an outside rocket stove. He uses a solar powered shower and heats the trailer he lives in with a wood stove. He makes the 34 mile commute to the city on a bicycle. Old newspapers double as toilet paper and for toothpaste he uses a concoction of washed-up cuttlefish bone and wild fennel seeds.
So why does he do it?
“… we no longer have to see the direct repercussions our purchases have on the people, environment and animals they affect. The degrees of separation between the consumer and the consumed have increased so much that we’re completely unaware of the levels of destruction and suffering embodied in the stuff we buy. The tool that has enabled this separation is money.”
