The internet is an amazing thing. I liken it to the world’s largest library sitting right there on your desktop. Everything you want to know about everything is only a few clicks away. Having said that, the benefits that can be derived from navigating the information superhighway is not limited to education. Far from it. The net can also be entertaining. It can also be downright cool. Such is the case with two different sites I recently stumbled upon during my travels.
How many times have you had a tune stuck in your head but couldn’t recall the name of it? This has happened to me on a number of occasions and can be frustrating to say the least. Normally what I do in this case is plunk a line or two from the lyrics in to Google and voila! But wouldn’t it be nice if you could just hum a few bars?
Midomi.com advertises itself as the “…ultimate music search”. If you have a microphone all you need to do is hum, whistle or sing to find your favourite song. While this is an interesting approach the site offers much more. They have built up a large community around the service whereby users can sing along to their favourite songs and share them with others. Your shared works are stored in a database and can be rated by others. Think of it as anonymous karaoke.
Another interesting approach to discovering music is the one employed by Musicovery. When you arrive at the home page you are greeted by a flash animation. You can select the music you want to listen to by various factors such as mood. Are you feeling energetic? Dark? Calm? Make your selections and let the service do the rest.
